{"slug":"trends","domain":"research","title":"Search interest: which words people look for","summary":"Google Trends on web search or YouTube, autocomplete, and Wikipedia page views — free.","help":"trends: how much people look for a thing, from free public signals.\n\nRETURNS\n  interest: per term its `average` and `peak` on Google Trends' 0-100 scale, and\n  the `timeline`. With --anchor, each term as a percentage of the anchor's\n  average instead, and no timeline. suggest: `suggestions`, most typed first.\n  pageviews: `months`, with `total` and `monthly_average`.\n\nRELATIVE, AND ONLY WITHIN ONE ANSWER\n  Trends scales each request so its busiest point is 100. A number from one\n  answer means nothing beside a number from another. To compare more than five\n  terms, name an --anchor: it is asked beside every batch of four, and every\n  term is read against it. Choose an anchor about as searched as the terms.\n\nWHERE THE SEARCH WAS MADE\n  --property youtube asks YouTube's search, which is where a video's title and\n  its first words are found; the default is Google web search.\n\nA 429 IS NOT AN EMPTY ANSWER\n  Google refuses an address that asks too often. The refusal says so; ask again\n  in a few minutes. Answers are kept for a day, so asking twice is free and\n  instant.\n\nSOURCES\n  Google Trends; Google and YouTube autocomplete; the Wikimedia pageviews API.\n  Nothing is billed.\n\nStudies:\n  interest  \u003cterms\u003e\n      how much each term is searched, on one scale, with the timeline\n  suggest   \u003cq\u003e\n      what autocomplete offers for a phrase, most typed first\n  pageviews \u003carticle\u003e\n      a Wikipedia article's views by month, with the total and average\n\nJSON to stdout, so it composes: pipe to `jq` to pick a field, or `\u003e /tmp/…` to keep it.\nRun a study with no arguments — `trends interest` — to see what it takes.\n","example_command":"trends interest \"ancestors,great grandparents,stone age\" --property youtube","example_output":"","cost_class":"upstream-fetch","tier":"free","price_per_1k_calls":0,"price_is_from":false,"status":"available","commands":["trends"],"studies":[{"call":"interest","about":"how much each term is searched, on one scale, with the timeline","args":[{"name":"terms","positional":true,"list":true,"hint":"comma-separated search terms: up to 5, or 20 with --anchor"},{"name":"anchor","positional":false,"list":false,"hint":"a term asked beside every batch; each term reads as a percentage of it"},{"name":"property","positional":false,"list":false,"hint":"youtube | news | images; default web search"},{"name":"time","positional":false,"list":false,"hint":"'today 12-m' (default), 'today 5-y', 'now 7-d', 'all', or '2024-01-01 2024-12-31'"},{"name":"geo","positional":false,"list":false,"hint":"ISO country, e.g. US; default worldwide"}]},{"call":"suggest","about":"what autocomplete offers for a phrase, most typed first","args":[{"name":"q","positional":true,"list":false,"hint":"the start of a search, as a person types it"},{"name":"source","positional":false,"list":false,"hint":"google (default) | youtube"},{"name":"country","positional":false,"list":false,"hint":"whose searches rank them, e.g. us (default)"}]},{"call":"pageviews","about":"a Wikipedia article's views by month, with the total and average","args":[{"name":"article","positional":true,"list":false,"hint":"the title as in its URL, e.g. Whale_oil"},{"name":"project","positional":false,"list":false,"hint":"the wiki, e.g. en.wikipedia (default)"},{"name":"months","positional":false,"list":false,"hint":"whole months back, 1-60; default 12"}]}],"default_enabled":true,"first_seen":"2026-11-02T07:20:48.068668Z","enabled":false}
